An aseptic stand-up pouch for milk gets most of its shelf life from the filling step, not the film alone. The milk, the pouch and the filling zone are each sterilized, then the pouch is filled and sealed inside a sterile environment, so milk and plant drinks can ship and sit without a cold chain. Dairy is harder than juice or water: fat, protein and light sensitivity leave less room for a weak seal or barrier.
How aseptic filling keeps milk shelf-stable
The milk is sterilized upstream, usually by UHT heat, and cooled before it reaches the filler. The pouch is sterilized separately, typically with hydrogen peroxide or by irradiation, depending on the film and the line. The two meet in a sterile zone where the pouch is filled and sealed before anything can get in.
That’s why the film, the spout and the filler have to be chosen together. A film that can’t take your line’s sterilization method, or a spout the filler can’t open and close cleanly, breaks the chain.
Barrier film for dairy and plant milk pouches
Milk needs protection from oxygen and light at the same time. Light causes off-flavors in milk fat and breaks down vitamins added to many plant drinks, so long-life dairy usually needs a foil or metallized layer.
Barrier is measured, not assumed. Ask for the oxygen transmission rate (OTR) and water vapor transmission rate (WVTR) of each film you’re quoted. Lower numbers mean better protection.
Clear pouches let shoppers see the product but let in more oxygen and light. They can work for chilled plant milk that sells quickly. For ambient milk shipped long distances, a foil structure is worth the cost.
Spouts, caps, and filling-line fit
Leaks and contamination usually start at the spout and seal. Thin, low-fat drinks pour freely. Higher-fat and higher-protein drinks foam and cling, so a spout that pours a light drink cleanly can drip with a richer one. Use a tamper-evident cap.
Foam is the line problem buyers most often miss. A formula that fills cleanly at pilot speed can foam over and wet the seal area on a faster line. Fill trial pouches with your real formula at production speed before you approve the pack.

Shelf life and freight
Shelf life comes from the whole system: milk, film, seal and storage. Run incubation and stability tests on finished pouches with your actual formula before you print a shelf-life claim.
Empty pouches ship flat, so a truck carries far more empty packs than it could of bottles or jars. For milk programs that send empties to a co-packer, that freight saving is often what justifies the switch.
